Student Services
As a new international student you have the dual task of immersing yourself in a new university environment, while simultaneously navigating a new cultural environment. The University of Toronto understands that this is no easy task. Each campus has international offices to assist you: Centre for International Experience (St. George Campus), International Student Centre (Scarborough Campus) and International Centre (Mississauga Campus).
Centre for International Experience @ St. George
CIE is an excellent resource as you make your way on this journey and can offer information and support for many of the issues you may be facing. The Centre organizes social activities and outings which aim to introduce you to Canadian traditions, culture and places of interest, at the same time as providing you with an opportunity to meet other students. There are a broad range of programs on offer at CIE to ease the transition to life in a new culture.
- Cross Cultural Counselling: The counselling service can assist you in facing the special challenge of adapting to a new culture or dealing with problems that arise from cultural differences between yourself and your family, friends or other members of the University. For more information, please see the Cross Cultural Counselling page of this website or contact the Centre.
- Advice and Assistance: If you need advice or assistance with immigration regulations, health insurance, income tax, customs, etc., CIE staff have special knowledge and experience in these areas. Contact the Centre or browse the website for more information on these and other related matters.
- English Communication Program (ECP): If you feel your English could benefit from additional language study, ECP might be for you. The English Communication Program allows students to practice communicating English and learn about Canadian culture in a relaxed and supportive atmosphere. This is not a formal, academic language program. It is conversation based and student directed. Class sizes are small and instructors are cross-cultural educators.
- Activities and Trips: Throughout the year CIE offers a number of cultural activities and recreational trips in Toronto and other parts of Ontario. Please check the CIE website for upcoming trips and cultural activities.
In addition to CIE offerings, U of T offers a number of services to help you adjust to the University and enhance the non-academic aspects of student life. Take some time to familiarize yourself with the many student services which are available to you at the University of Toronto.
