Accessing Health Care Services
How to Use Your Health Insurance
All eligible Canadian residents and registered international students must present valid proof of health care coverage prior to receiving medical services. Upon visiting a medical service provider you will be required to present your UHIP card. If visiting a preferred provider (i.e. a provider that accepts UHIP), the health care or medical provider will record your information and bill Sun Life, the insurance provider, directly towards medical consultation fees.
MAKING A CLAIM:
In the event that you are billed for medical consultation fees, you will need to request reimbursement from Sun Life. To request reimbursement, you must complete a Claim Form and get an official receipt for services from the health care or medical provider (be sure to keep a photocopy of your bill). Completed forms must be submitted directly to Sun Life. To learn more about submitting a claim, visit the UHIP website. For additional information, please refer to the following Sun Life webcasts:
- Printing and Submitting a Claim Form
- How to Check the Status of a Claim
- How to Sign Up for Direct Deposit
Important note: Some health care providers may charge the Ontario Medical Association rate – a significantly higher rate than UHIP or OHIP. You will be reimbursed the UHIP rate only. It is important to speak with the health care provider beforehand about medical rates.

Preferred Health Care Network
Not all health care and medical providers will bill Sun Life directly. You may be charged upfront for hospital or medical services. It is important to visit a preferred provider (i.e. a provider that accepts UHIP) in order to guarantee coverage.
To find a preferred health care provider, visit the International Health Care Network. This online search tool is designed to find a preferred network provider closest to you. You may easily register using your email address and UHIP policy number (050150).
