CIE International Program Bursary

CIE administers a needs-based bursary for U of T students participating in a CIE international program. You must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or protected person to be eligible to apply.

Please upload the completed CIE Bursary Application Form to the "documents" section of your student profile on the Centre for International Experience Student Portal.

Application deadlines:

CIE Strategic Exchange Partner Awards

The following awards are available for students going to the specified institutions:

  • National University of Singapore (NUS) Fall/ Winter — $2500
  • Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) Fall/ Winter — $2000
  • Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) Summer — $1500
  • Lund University (Sweden) Fall/Winter — $2500
  • Lund University (Sweden) full academic year — $3500

All students who are accepted to the program and admitted by the exchange partner will automatically be considered for the award. No separate application is required.

Canadian Friends of Hebrew University of Jerusalem Award


This needs-based award is available for study at Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Undergraduate and graduate students who are registered in any U of T degree program are eligible to apply. Available to Canadian citizens or permanent residents.

Faculty of Arts & Science students with plans to study at HUJ during the regular academic year may apply only if participating in a CIE self-design or exchange program.

The maximum value of the award is $20,000 for both graduate and undergraduate students.
For the summer term, the maximum value of the award is $4,000.

C.D. Howe Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship is unavailable for the 2012-13 academic year.

This scholarship is available for study at Laval University. Please note, courses at Laval are taught in French.

You may be eligible for this scholarship if you are a St. George campus Faculty of Arts & Science student with a focus in Canadian Studies or International Relations. You must be approved for the scholarship and exchange program through CIE, in conjunction with the C.D. Howe Institute.

The value of the award is $15,000+.

Hong Kong University of Science and Technology Scholarship

This scholarship is for students in Applied Science and Engineering who will be participating in the six-week Hong Kong University of Science and Technology Summer Exchange ProgramFour scholarships of $2000 each are available for the top participating students.  Both domestic and international students are eligible for this award.

No application is required.  Once you are accepted to the program you will be automatically considered for this scholarship.

Killam American Fund for International Exchange

This award is for undergraduate students who are participating in exchange programs between U of T and US universities. Holders of the award may be either legal residents of the US who are studying on exchange at U of T or U of T students studying on exchange at any US partner universities.

Mari-Ellen Murray Memorial Award

This award provides financial assistance to a U of T Faculty of Arts & Science student who plans a period of second-language study through a U of T exchange program. The student must demonstrate a commitment to volunteerism and service to the university community, as well as a love of travel. The Exchange must be at a location where English is not the official language. The scholarship will be awarded based on academic merit (CGPA 3.5 or higher) and extra-curricular involvement.  Available to Canadian citizens or permanent residents.

The value of the award for 2012-2013 is $4000 (one award).

To apply, write a one- to two-page essay stating why you would be a good candidate for this award.

Mitsui Canada Foundation Student Scholarship

This award provides financial assistance for a student going to Japan on exchange. The value of the award for a full-academic year is $15 000. Priority will be given to students going to the University of Tokyo or Kyoto University.

Pekka Sinervo International Travel Award

This award provides financial assistance to a U of T Faculty of Arts & Science student who plans a period of exchange program study at an international post secondary institution. The student must demonstrate financial need.

The value of the award is approximately $500 and varies from year to year.

Scotiabank Scholarship for International Students


CIE would like to thank Scotiabank for generously sponsoring this scholarship for U of T international students participating in an exchange program abroad. Two awards are available for 2012-13 academic year, valued at $2,500 each. The scholarship will be awarded based on academic merit and extra-curricular involvement.

To apply, write a one- to two-page essay explaining why you would be a good candidate for this award — be sure to address your academic merit and extra-curricular activities in the essay.

Application deadline: April 30, 2013

This scholarship is restricted to international students only.

Submit your application to the Student Exchange Program Office, Room 209, 33 St. George.

St. George's Society Award

This award is intended for study in the United Kingdom through a U of T exchange program.

If you are a Victoria, Trinity or St. Michael's College student, apply directly through your registrar's office. For all other U of T students, you will automatically be considered for this award if you have expressed financial need through a CIE bursary application.

The value of the award varies from $250 to $2,000.  You must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident to be eligible for this award.
